Kathmandu: The much-anticipated Nepal Premier League (NPL), a franchise-based T20 cricket tournament, begins today at the Tribhuvan University (TU) International Cricket Stadium in Kirtipur. Organized by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), this inaugural edition has already generated excitement, with the participation of top cricketers from around the globe.
Eight franchise teams, representing Nepal's seven provinces and the federal capital, will compete for the coveted trophy, featuring a stone from Kalapatthar engraved with the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest.
One of the tournament’s highlights is its global outreach, as matches will be broadcast live on Star Sports with commentary by international cricket experts. Upgrades to the TU Cricket Stadium, including a digital scoreboard and enhanced seating, further add to the excitement. Cricket fans like Raman Thapa from Imadol have eagerly booked tickets to watch international stars play live on Nepali soil.
Renowned players such as India’s Shikhar Dhawan, New Zealand’s Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham, Pakistan’s Mohammad Mohsin Khan, Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Milantha, and England’s Ben Mike are among the international recruits, bringing global attention to the NPL.
The league is also a golden opportunity for Nepali players to gain exposure by playing alongside international stars with vast experience in all cricket formats and T20 leagues. This is expected to significantly boost cricket's development in Nepal. If managed professionally and commercially, the NPL could serve as a game changer for sports in the country, encouraging more investment in cricket infrastructure and grassroots-level tournaments.
High Investment and Exciting Rewards
The franchise teams have seen substantial investments, with Pokhara Avengers purchased for Rs. 35.7 million and other teams costing up to Rs. 40 million. Although CAN has not disclosed the prize money, it has announced that the best Nepali cricketer of the tournament will be awarded a car.
